Summer Fun

My summer has officially come to an end. It has been a well deserved, restful, but eventful, stay-cation. I officially ended the summer with my trip to Martha’s Vineyard (for the third summer in a row). I think this particular vacation will become a staple in my life. It’s peaceful and invigorating at the same time. Since I have returned from the Vineyard, I have been to see the revised movie Sparkle, Brunch at the Russian Tea Room, spent an afternoon on Broadway to see Porgy and Bess, had a beach day, and spent a Saturday afternoon with my mother at Coney Island. Most of which were not free, which was the original plan of the vacation, (all things free in the city). But it was time, fellowship, and money well spent.  I won’t discontinue my blog, but I will add more to it throughout the fall. I plan on taking a dance class, and continuing my daily exercise. I lost 11 lbs this summer, even with all the mimosas filled bunches and lunches. So continue with me on my 50lb weight loss journey.

Growth

I missed the Jeff Redd, Johnny Kemp concert, but I did see some interesting films and spent some well deserved time with my brother from another mother.  The first film we saw was Le Harve, a French film about a man who helped an African immigrant teen get to his family in London. The second film, which was much more interesting, 30 Beats, was about the sexual escapades of New Yorkers. What I liked about the film was they didn’t show any explicit sex scenes, they took you close, and then continued to the next couple, which included one partner from the previous  couple moving one to their next sexual adventure. Your mind was your sexual playground.

As for the weekend, I spent it in hair heaven. I attended a natural hair event, where natural hair women were celebrated because of their natural hair and their sprit. I also attended the “end of an era” celebration for Tendrils natural hair salon. After 25 years Ms. Diane Bailey decided she has style her last twisted in order to teach, write, and start a natural hair institute. Hairs to the future

OLD SCHOOL

Last week was so much fun, Chubb Rock, DJ Scratch, EPMD, and Big Daddy Kane represented for the old school rap heads at BB Kings. I always think about my students and what will they have to represent their childhood musically, the music now sucks. Nothing, from what I hear, will stand the test of time. To continue with the old school flavor, this week’s concert includes, Jeff Redd, Johnny Kemp, Full Force, Force MD’s, and Meli’sa Morgan.  RIP Miss Melody.

All In A Week

So this past week I went to Chelsea Piers for River Flicks on the Hudson for a screening of Money Ball starring Brad Pitt. Not really interesting if you are not into baseball or Brad, sorry. But it was time well spent with my sister- friend Pam. Next it was off to Apollo Live, the new version of amateur night at the Apollo with guest host Tony Rock. I ran into to a high school friend who was on the production crew. I was able to score a better seat, which put me closer to Gladys Knight and Michael Bivans. Doug E. Fresh was in the house, and Tamia was the special musical guest. I ended the week with after work drinks with a friend for her birthday, the diva herself, Van-ess. But I also had to get my anointing, spending Sunday morning at First Corinthian Baptist church in Harlem. A friend of mine constantly reminds me, it’s all about balance.

Doing It All

So much is going on. I have only been on vacation for two weeks and I feel that it is almost over. But there is so much to do. Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival started yesterday, the after work roof tops are in full swing,  movies and music in the park, seminars at the Schomburg Museum, free jazz at City Winery and other places around the city. My calendar is full, but I’ll be back by end of week to let you know what I actually did. Work hard, play harder.

Mr. Magic

Although I didn’t see the revised 21 Jump Street with Channing Tatum, I have seen the last 4 or five movies he’s been in, yes even Magic Mike. Tatum could play a gay frog that’s purple instead of green and I would go see it. That man is too sexy for words. There is something about him that is wholesome yet manly and intriguing. It may not be the block buster of the summer, but if you are looking for eye candy, it’s the cat’s meow.

NO MEAT?

My basic food groups are cheese, bread, and meat, none which was present in my meal last night. I had the privilege of dinning at Maimonide of Brooklyn (MOB) in Brooklyn, a vegan restaurant. My faith in food has been renewed. It was so refreshing to eat and feel satisfied and not like a stuffed pig, (which by the way, my middle name should be pork as much as I love it). On my healthy hair journey, I have tried to transfer that into my healthier life journey with the products I use for my skin and in my body. Restaurants such as MOB will definitely help in my process. If in Brooklyn, whether you’re a vegan or not, MOB is where it is at if you want a refreshing meal. Did I mention that they had chamomile wine? Oh the times I will spend at MOB.

Dance Africa Part II

Well, I made it to Brooklyn on Sunday to the Dance Africa Bazaar. It was so hot I had to stop just to think. But as usual, I scored some really cute earrings. The next bazaar is the “International African Street Festival” in Brooklyn, down by the Navy Yard. I remember when it use to be at Boys and Girls High School in Bed-Stuy. So until the next street fair keep cool, and wear your street finds at all times.

Dance Africa

Every year my summer officially starts with Dance Africa at BAM in Brooklyn. Yesterday started out great but ended in a rain storm, so Dance Africa was literally a wash. Hopefully I won’t miss the last day of the bazaar tomorrow.

Blogging is not my nature

Is it crazy that I'm reading Google Blogger for Dummies? Well I don't care (lol), yes I do. But I am presented with a challenge and I am gonna be apart of this world. So here goes. Until next time.
